Pole Buildings

What is a Pole Building?

Pole buildings were pioneered in the 1930’s. People started calling them pole buildings because round utility poles were originally used for their construction. Modern advancements in materials and building techniques have led to better designs and very efficient structures.

The technical term for pole buildings is “post frame” construction. A typical house is called “stick frame” construction. In post frame construction 6×6 or 6×8 poles/posts provide a strong frame for the shell of the building. The “studs” in the walls of a pole building run horizontal and are called “girts.” Exterior girts are placed on the poles and a truss system is attached to the roof. Roper Buildings only uses 2×6’s in our girt framing and provides a “double truss system” on each pole.
